What To Expect

Al Khor
Also spelled Al Khawr means "sea on threesides" in Arabic. Older than Doha but far smaller in size. Al Khor is located an easy 50 kilometres to the north of Doha. It used to be the center of the pearling industry in Qatar but lost its importance after the introduction of cultured pearls. It now boasts a scenic harbour where you can find traditional fishing dhows, a corniche leading to mangrove colonies and a museum showcasing the fishing, pearling and dhow building industries.

Purple Island - Al Khor Island
Located in the northeast of Qatar, Bin Ghannam Island, popularly known as Purple Island, is a must-visit spot. An hour’s drive from Doha, near Al Khor city, the island is famous for its natural beauty, exotic flora and fauna, and is ideal for a day trip for the whole family.

Al Zubara Fort
Situated on the North-Western part of Qatar, the Al Zubarah Fort was built besides the ruins of an ancient fort. Al-Zubarah was once a flourishing port and a centre of trade, fishing and pearling. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, this protected area has become one of the most important archaeological sites in Qatar. An international team of archaeologists and antiquities experts, led by the Qatar Museums Authority, have uncovered many of the artifacts which are displayed in the renovated fort.

What an amazing day with an equally amazing guide. Adnan picked us up right on time at our hotel and spent the next 6 hours showing and explaining to us sites in Northern Qatar. Adnan was personable and helpful, providing historic and cultural information, as well as general information related to living in Qatar. He was very friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. He was happy to make a pit stop and ensured we had good opportunities for photos. The sites on the tour are unique and interesting. I highly recommend this tour and Adnan as a guide - you will not be disappointed! Thank you Adnan for an absolutely great day! 10 out of 10

This tour was such a joy to go on with Shabbir. He was incredibly knowledgable about the history of Qatar, and gave enough time for exploring. I was able to stop at the fish market in Al Khor, where the locals were more than willing to show whatever catch was left from that morning. Shabbir explained the differences between the boats, which gave a much better sense of the fishing industry in Al Khor and how it supplies major cities like Doha.
Purple Island was an actual oasis! There is no shade so be sure to wear a hat and bring sun screen. All the crabs were out :) pretty surreal seeing mangroves in the middle of the desert. As it’s off season, I had Zubarah fort to myself. Of course it was incredibly hot but there was so much information about how the fort plays a huge role in Qatar’s history. Overall I recommend this tour with Shabbir (he was honestly the best!).
Great trip to Northern Qatar

Really enjoyed my trip to northern Qatar with my guide Ali. He was very friendly and knowledgeable and went out of his way to make sure I was enjoying the trip. The town of Al Khor was interesting and the mangroves beautiful, but Al Zubara Fort and the fishing village were definitely highlights of this trip, and my trip so far. I recommend taking this tour, and asking for Ali if possible.
